A closer look at Playful Kitten with Yarn

29 areas. The yarn ball's wound lines are the only detail — they are what make it wool rather than a sphere, so darkening a few of the strands and leaving the rest is more effective than filling it flat.
A bright yarn against a muted kitten, or the reverse; matching them wastes the sheet's only prop. Crimson wool against a slate kitten is the sharpest version. Carry the wool colour along the trailing strand so it stays visible against the white ground.
