218 areas, each one a pane bounded by thick black leading. That leading is the sheet's entire structure, so it should stay black and unbroken — every pane needs to be filled right up to it without crossing it, which is the discipline this drawing is teaching.

Stained glass wants saturated, jewel-toned colour with no white left anywhere: deep ocean sky, crimson and amber in the sun's rays, ivy in the landscape. The dove is the exception — leaving it white is what makes it the light source of the whole window.
