A closer look at Mermaid on Coral Reef
A mermaid sits turned to one side on the seabed, long hair falling down her back, surrounded on both sides by a reef of branching corals, sea fans, anemones and rounded brain coral.
304 areas, and the reef holds nearly all of them. Coral is the most colour-tolerant subject in this collection — real reefs are every colour at once — so this is the sheet where an unplanned palette actually works. The mermaid herself is only a dozen shapes.
Go loud on the reef: coral pink, amber, violet, jade, all adjacent. Then keep the mermaid restrained — one tail colour, one hair colour — so the figure stays readable against a background doing everything at once. That contrast is the whole composition.
