A closer look at Majestic Safari Lion

A lion lies on a rock facing straight out of the page, forepaws crossed in front, its mane drawn as dozens of individually outlined locks radiating from the face. Acacia and grass fill the background behind the rock.

819 areas and the mane is nearly all of them. Filling each lock separately takes an hour and looks stiff; flood the whole mane in one mid tone, then darken a scattering of locks around the outer edge so the ring reads as depth rather than pattern.

Amber for the mane over a sand body is the natural reading, with cocoa on the darkest outer locks. Leave the muzzle and the fur around the eyes pale — the face is small relative to the mane and loses definition if it goes as warm.

Print it at 100% rather than “Fit to page” — the 12 mm margin is already in the PDF. The printing guide covers paper weight, ink and the print-dialog settings that matter.
